The Spectator : Platonic pals can't pretend any longer

Platonic pals can?t pretend any longer

Hey dude. You know that female friend of yours who you know is secretly in love with you? When you watch movies, she leans against you. When she can?t quite make it home from Water Street, you let her crash at your place. You would never go there but it?s obvious that she wants you. Newsflash: it?s all in your head.
I know what you are thinking. You are pretty sure you picked up on those social cues (pick-up tricks from my dad: a girl is flirting with him when she ?flutters? her lashes, a.k.a. blinks, and tosses her hair, a.k.a. moves her head). How in the world could this be true?
Psychology Professor April Bleske-Rechek has been studying cross-sex friendships since graduate school but with a new twist ? from an evolutionary standpoint. Her findings found that men are more attracted to their female friends than women are to their male friends. In addition, men have a tendency to overestimate how attracted their female friends are to them.
Wait, this is the plot to half the movies you?ve seen. It always works out for them, right? But surprise, surprise, this is actually science.
Bleske-Rechek said cross-sex relationship have only been studied from a social behavior standpoint and this is the first time that biology has been proven to be a factor.
?There are a lot of benefits (to cross-sex friendships),? Bleske-Rechek said. ?Men and women report lots and lots of benefits. A lot of people say, ?well can you ever have true friendships?? Of course! Sexual attraction doesn?t mean it can?t be a true friendship where two people care for each other.?
In the study conducted about college students, Bleske-Rechek and her colleagues questioned 88 cross-sex heterosexual friendship pairs. The length of friendship varied from two weeks to 17 years, the study said.
Other findings from the study included being attracted to an opposite sex friend or developing a friendship with someone could lead to negative results within a person?s current relationship, Bleske-Rechek said.
?It?s possible that people are engaged in friendships where they maybe have companionships but someone isn?t paying attention to them,? Bleske-Rechek said. ?They are feeling desirable so this could change the dynamics of their romantic relationships or vise versa.?
Senior Josh Appel said he has had friendships with women for ten years that he considers to be purely friendships.
Appel did admit, though, that maybe once or twice there have been instances of attraction, but never anything that would be acted on. Bleske-Rechek?s research said men and women typically don?t consider those attractions to be enough to make it more than a friendship, but it is.
?I think people will say, ?oh it shouldn?t be like that?,? Bleske-Rechek said. ?Well of course it shouldn?t be like that but this is the reality of human relationships.?
The article, ?Benefits or Burden? Attraction in Cross-sex Friendship,? said platonic friendships very commonly involve attraction and often make girlfriends and boyfriends very jealous.
?The findings implicate attraction in cross-sex friendship as both common and of potential negative consequence for individuals? long-term mateships.? Bleske-Rechek said.
Alumn Erin Hirsch worked on the cross-sex friendship research with Bleske-Rechek for three and a half years while she attended UW-Eau Claire. Having platonic relationships is a biological desire and people shouldn?t resist them, she said.
?I think they are great to have. To get another opinion and perspective on life,? Hirsch said. ?With the research it is interesting to see that there is jealousy and attraction that plays a role in cross-sex friendships regardless of age and relationship status.?
Both Bleske-Rechek and Somers agreed that this biological response doesn?t seem to be something that people will evolve out of. Humans have a natural desire to reproduce and they surround themselves with opportunities to do so.
So your ?A Lot Like Love? fantasy of your bestie pal shamelessly throwing themselves at you in a very romantic display of affection might not be happening in the near future, but you never know. You surrounded yourself with them for a reason. Don?t let Hollywood get to your head, your friendship just might develop into something more. But it?s OK if it doesn?t, too.

PC Tools Registry Mechanic

Does your PC lack pep? If it's over a year old, there's a good chance that it isn't running as smoothly as it did when it was fresh from the box. Over time, the Windows registry goes awry, programs leave behind junk even when they're uninstalled, and other miscellaneous performance-draining scenarios negatively impact the system. PC Tools Registry Mechanic, a pared down version of PC Tools Performance Toolkit, aims to fix that. The $29.99 program doesn't reorganize files for faster access, restore lost multimedia files, repair hard drives, or accelerate startup or shutdown times like its $39.99 big brother, but it does offer some performance enhancement. You may want to look elsewhere?like the free Editors' Choice award-winning SlimWare Utilities SlimCleaner?first before pulling out the wallet.

System Requirements and Interface
Compatible with Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP PCs, PC Tools Registry Mechanic requires 50MB of disk space and an internet connection for registering the software and receiving updates.

The tools are spread across five tabs?Dashboard, Performance, Privacy, Recovery, Settings?but there's an option for "1-Click Optimization" should you not want to run the tools individually. The Dashboard, and the interface overall, is easy to read and features descriptions in everyday language. There's even a System Health meter that gives you at-a-glance status information.

The Clean-Up Process and Performance Enhancement
Clicking the large "1-Click" button began the cleanup process, which took just seconds to complete. PC Tools Registry Mechanic found over 90 registry and privacy issues that were soon remedied. I also used the app to remove unwanted and unused software from the PC.

I tested PC Tools Registry Mechanic's ability to clean up a PC by performing two tests?running the Geekbench system performance tool and measuring boot times. I performed both tests three times and averaged the results, both before and after using the suite to clean the PC. Before PC Tools Registry Mechanic scrubbed the system, the 2-GHz Intel Core i7 X990 Style-Note notebook with 4GB of RAM, and 80GB Intel SSD booted achieved a 5,914 Geekbench score, and booted in 50.2 seconds. After using PC Tools Registry Mechanic, the GeekBench score improved to 6,125. The notebook boot time decreased to 39 seconds. Neither result dominated the field. Check out this chart to see how PC Tools Registry Mechanic fared against the competition. Highlight measurements represent catagory leaders.

tuneup utilities chart

After running the tests, I used the computer extensively to get a sense of how the app has changed the responsiveness of the machine. The system felt snappier, but I saw greater performance gains elsewhere?such as with PC Tools' own Performance Toolkit and SlimWare Utilities Slimcleaner.

Should You Use PC Tools?
PC Tools Registry Mechanic did a decent job of improving our testbed's overall performance, but there are more potent options. Plus, in the age of the multi-computer household, the installation limitations seem outdated; if you want to install it on more than three PCs, you have to buy two licenses, which will cost nearly $60. PC Tools Performance Toolkit 2011 is a solid tune-up utility, but its model is outdated, and there are better choices out there, including both PC Tools' own Performance Toolkit and Editors' Choice winner SlimWare Utilities SlimCleaner, which is free.

FDA: New Mexico peanut plant to stay shut amid salmonella probe

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will not allow Sunland, Inc. to restart operations at its Portales, N.M., plant, in connection with a two-month-old recall of peanut products, according to media reports.

The FDA ?halted operations of the country?s largest organic peanut butter processor Monday, cracking down on salmonella poisoning for the first time with new enforcement authority the agency gained in a 2011 food safety law,? the Associated Press reported.

In Monday?s enforcement?actions that suspended Sunland?s ?food facility registration? and prohibited it from distributing food, the FDA stated?

?The fact that peanut butter made by the company has been linked to an outbreak of Salmonella Bredeney that has sickened 41 people in 20 states, coupled with Sunland?s history of violations led FDA to make the decision to suspend the company?s registration.?

Sunland Inc. issued a statement today saying it was surprised by the FDA?s suspension of its registration and the associated?shutdown, while indicating?that it will continue to cooperate with the FDA.

?Sunland?s goal remains the same?to take all appropriate measures for the safe processing and handling of raw peanuts in its shelling plant and the safe production of nut butter products in its peanut butter plant,? the company said. ?Sunland is continuing to work with FDA in order to accomplish all steps necessary to begin shelling operations in its peanut mill as soon as possible.?

In the above video, KRQE reported Monday night:

?Just hours after a New Mexico peanut butter plant announced its plan to resume processing tomorrow, the Feds said ?not so fast.??

The company?s problems came to light in September after an outbreak of salmonella was found linked to Trader Joe?s Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter.

Sunland?s Sept. 24 ?voluntarily limited recall of almond butter and peanut butter products due to possible health risk? was expanded in October to total more than 200 products, according to Sunland?s release on its website and on the FDA website.

?Sunland had voluntarily closed its plant after a September outbreak and planned to reopen its peanut processing facility on Tuesday, with hopes of selling peanut butter again by the end of the year, the AP reported.?

The FDA?s action?proceeded without a court order, under new powers granted to it by Congress last year.

?This was the FDA?s first use of its registration suspension authority, under the Food Safety Modernization Act,? the agency stated. ?This new authority enables the agency to take this action when food manufactured, processed, packed, received, or held by a facility has a reasonable probability of causing serious adverse health consequences or death to humans or animals, and other conditions are met.?

ABC News Radio reported that Sunland ?can request an informal hearing to lift the suspension.?

In a Nov. 15 statement on its website, Sunland stated, ?At no time in its twenty four year history has Sunland, Inc. released for distribution any products that it knew to be potentially contaminated with harmful microorganisms.?

Arafat's remains exhumed for poison tests

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Forensic experts took samples from Yasser Arafat's buried corpse in the West Bank on Tuesday, trying to determine if he was murdered by Israeli agents using the hard-to-trace radioactive poison, Polonium.

Palestinians witnessed the funeral of their hero and longtime leader eight years ago, but conspiracy theories surrounding his death have never been laid to rest.

Many are convinced their icon was the victim of a cowardly assassination, and may stay convinced whatever the outcome of this autopsy. But some in the city of Ramallah where he lies deplored the exhumation.

"This is wrong. After all this time, today they suddenly want to find out the truth?" said construction worker Ahmad Yousef, 31, who stopped to watch the disinterment, carried out behind a wall of blue plastic near the Palestinian presidency headquarters.

"They should have done it eight years ago," he said.

French magistrates in August opened a murder inquiry into Arafat's death in Paris in 2004 after a Swiss institute said it had discovered high levels of polonium on clothing of his which was supplied by his widow, Suha, for a television documentary.

"Samples will be taken according to a very strict protocol and these samples will be analyzed," said Darcy Christen, spokesman for Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland that carried out the original tests on Arafat's clothes.

"In order to do these analyses, to check, cross-check and double cross-check, it will take several months and I don't think we'll have anything tangible available before March or April next year," he added.

Arafat was always a freedom fighter to Palestinians but a terrorist to Israelis first, and a partner for peace only later. He led the bid for a Palestinian state through years of war and peacemaking, then died in a French hospital aged 75 after a short, mysterious illness.

No autopsy was carried out at the time, at the request of Suha, and French doctors who treated him said they were unable to determine the cause of death.

But allegations of foul play immediately surfaced, and many Palestinians pointed the finger at Israel, which confined Arafat to his West Bank headquarters in Ramallah for the final two and a half years of his life after a Palestinian uprising erupted.

Israel denies murdering him. Its leader at the time, Ariel Sharon, now lies in a coma from which he is expected never to awake. Israel invited the Palestinian leadership to release all Arafat's medical records, which were never made public following his death and still have not been opened.

FRENCH INVESTIGATORS

Polonium, apparently ingested with food, was found to have caused the death of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006. But some experts have questioned whether Arafat could have died in this way, pointing to a brief recovery during his illness that they said was not consistent with radioactive poisoning. They also noted he did not lose all his hair.

Eight years is considered the limit to detect any traces of the fast-decaying polonium and Lausanne hospital questioned in August if it would be worth seeking any samples, if access to Arafat's body was delayed as late as "October or November."

Not all of Arafat's family agreed to the exhumation, and his wife Suha chose not to attend the operation she had prompted.

Working in parallel with the forensic team, French magistrates were in Ramallah this week to ask if members of Arafat's inner circle might be able to shed light on his death.

One source told Reuters the French had a list of 60 questions, and had questioned one man for five hours.

Many Palestinians acknowledge that a Palestinian would almost certainly have had to administer any poison, wittingly or unwittingly.

Graphene/nanotube hybrid makes single-surface material for energy storage, electronics

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? A seamless graphene/nanotube hybrid created at Rice University may be the best electrode interface material possible for many energy storage and electronics applications.

Led by Rice chemist James Tour, researchers have successfully grown forests of carbon nanotubes that rise quickly from sheets of graphene to astounding lengths of up to 120 microns, according to a paper published November 27 by Nature Communications. A house on an average plot with the same aspect ratio would rise into space.

That translates into a massive amount of surface area, the key factor in making things like energy-storing supercapacitors.

The Rice hybrid combines two-dimensional graphene, which is a sheet of carbon one atom thick, and nanotubes into a seamless three-dimensional structure. The bonds between them are covalent, which means adjacent carbon atoms share electrons in a highly stable configuration. The nanotubes aren't merely sitting on the graphene sheet; they become a part of it.

"Many people have tried to attach nanotubes to a metal electrode and it's never gone very well because they get a little electronic barrier right at the interface," Tour said. "By growing graphene on metal (in this case copper) and then growing nanotubes from the graphene, the electrical contact between the nanotubes and the metal electrode is ohmic. That means electrons see no difference, because it's all one seamless material.

"This gives us, effectively, a very high surface area of more than 2,000 square meters per gram of material. It's a huge number," said Tour, Rice's T.T. and W.F. Chao Chair in Chemistry as well as a professor of mechanical engineering and materials science and of computer science and a co-author with former postdoctoral researcher and lead author Yu Zhu, now an assistant professor at the University of Akron.

Tour said proof of the material's hybrid nature lies in the seven-membered rings at the transition from graphene to nanotube, a structure predicted by theory for such a material and now confirmed through electron microscope images with subnanometer resolution.

Carbon has no peer as a conductive material in such a thin and robust form, especially in the form of graphene or certain types of nanotubes. Combining the two appears to offer great potential for electronic components like fast supercapacitors that, because of the massive surface area, may hold a great deal of energy in a tiny package.

Rice chemist Robert Hauge and his team made the first steps toward such a hybrid over the past decade. Hauge, a distinguished faculty fellow in chemistry at Rice and co-author of the new work, discovered a way to make densely packed carpets of nanotubes on a carbon substrate by suspending catalyst-laced flakes in a furnace. When heated, the catalyst built carbon nanotubes like skyscrapers, starting at the substrate and working their way up. In the process, they lifted the aluminum oxide buffer into the air. The whole thing looked like a kite with many strings and was dubbed an odako, like the giant Japanese kites.

In the new work, the team grew a specialized odako that retained the iron catalyst and aluminum oxide buffer but put them on top of a layer of graphene grown separately on a copper substrate. The copper stayed to serve as an excellent current collector for the three-dimensional hybrids that were grown within minutes to controllable lengths of up to 120 microns.

Electron microscope images showed the one-, two- and three-walled nanotubes firmly embedded in the graphene, and electrical testing showed no resistance to the flow of current at the junction.

"The performance we see in this study is as good as the best carbon-based supercapacitors that have ever been made," Tour said. "We're not really a supercapacitor lab, and still we were able to match the performance because of the quality of the electrode. It's really remarkable, and it all harkens back to that unique interface."

Business Networking is Good for Franchises | Franchwire

This is a guest post from The Franchise King?, Joel Libava.? He provides tips and advice to individuals interested in franchise ownership with his top-notch guaranteed franchise ownership advisory services and to the masses via his award-winning franchise blog. He?s on Twitter constantly @FranchiseKing.

Have you been out and about, networking? Do lots of people in your community know who you are and what business you?re the proud owner of?

Do you know why it?s so important for you, the independent or franchise business owner, to do it?

I do, and I?m going to share 3 powerful benefits of networking.

1.? Visibility

People are busy. They?re what my Mom calls, ?Running and chasing? all the time. If they?re not working, they?re running errands, helping their family members with miscellaneous things, or doing other life-stuff.

At the same time, they?re getting bombarded with thousands of marketing messages.

And, unless you?re marketing budget is unlimited, those marketing messages aren?t always coming from you.

That?s why you need to be visible. And, networking allows you to do just that.

Visibility can come from things like;

  • Being a member of a committee at your local chamber of commerce
  • Being a sponsor for one of your community?s school sports teams
  • Becoming heavily involved in a charity

The bottom line is this; become a visible member of your community. If you do that, it will be a bit harder for marketing messages from other concerns to get through to your current and future customers. Plus, you?ll feel good about yourself, because you?ll be a contributing member of your community

2.? Drumming

If you?re the owner of the local Domino?s franchise, networking is a must.

And, because of the product you sell, you have a serious advantage over most of the other local businesses in your community; you can drum up new business by handing out free pizza.

Other types of businesses don?t have it so easy.

For example, if you?re the owner of the local Hardware store, what can you give away for free to drum up business?

If you?re a gas-station owner, what can you carry around from business to business-or even house to house that can help bring in new customers?

If you own a picture framing store, what can you bring to a networking event to give away?

In this example, being the owner of a pizza franchise clearly rules.

(If you own a non-pizza business, please share some of things that you?ve successfully done to drum up business as you network. Franchwire readers would love to hear about your success!)

3.? Advice

If you?re attending networking events, including formal ones like BNI, there will be numerous opportunities for you to forge deep connections with other like-minded business owners. These connections-if nurtured properly, can become resources for you and your business.

For example, what if you?re thinking of adding another location?

Now, obviously you?ll reach out to the commercial real estate agent who helped you secure your current business location. But, why would you want to only use one resource to help you find a suitable second location? There?s a certain amount of risk involved; you want an opportunity to look at all the options available?not just the ones that are being offered by the agent that helped you last time.

If you?ve been networking for a while, you have a built-in advice network that?s only a phone call or an email away. This is the time to use it!

Call the owners of a couple of non-competing businesses and ask them if they know of any commercial space that?s available-or about to become available. There?s a good chance that they?ve, ?heard things.? You may even get some unsolicited advice along the way that ends up saving you some money. Who knows what you?ll hear?

I know one thing for sure:

Small business owners who commit to spending some of their time networking and getting active in their communities have a huge leg up on those that don?t.

Direction of Time Fuzzy for Subatomic Particles

Subatomic particles don't care if time moves forward or backward ? it's all the same to them. But now physicists have found proof of one theorized exception to this rule.

Usually, time is symmetrical for particles, meaning events happen the same way if time progresses forward or backward. For example, a video of two particles colliding and scattering off each other can be played forward or backward, and makes sense either way. (That's not the case for macroscopic objects in the real world. You can spill a glass of milk on the floor, but if time were to move backward, the milk can't pick itself up and fall back into the glass.)

However, physicists thought there might be cases where time wasn't symmetrical for particles either ? where certain events worked with time flowing in one direction and not the other. Now, for the first time, they've found proof of this phenomenon.

Researchers working on the BaBar experiment, which ran from 1999 to 2008 at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in California, analyzed nearly 10 years of data from billions of particle collisions. They now report that certain types of particles change into one another much more often in one direction than they do in the reverse, confirming that some particle processes have a preferred direction in time.

This is the first solid proof of time asymmetry for subatomic particles. [Nature's Tiniest Particles Dissected (Infographic)]

"It was exciting to design an experimental analysis that enabled us to observe, directly and unambiguously, the asymmetrical nature of time," BaBar collaborator Fernando Mart?nez-Vidal, a physicist at the University of Valencia in Spain who led the study, said in a statement. "This is a sophisticated analysis, the kind of experimental work that can only be done when an experiment is mature."

The particles in the experiment were B mesons, which are made of one quark and one antiquark (the antimatter partner of a quark) in the "bottom" flavor. B mesons can flip between two different states called?B-zero and B-even, and the BaBar data show that these transformations happened six times more often in one direction than in the other.

Previous attempts to look for time asymmetry were not direct, because researchers were unable to disentangle time asymmetry from other asymmetries involving charge and parity (a particle characteristic akin to left- or right-handedness).

In the new study, scientists harnessed the power of quantum entanglement, in which two particles can be connected so that an action on one reflects in the other. Using this phenomenon, the scientists were able to measure one B meson and acquire information about another particle at the same time.

"In the past, a true test of time-reversal symmetry with unstable particles was considered to be impossible," said BaBar associate Jos? Bernab?u, also at the University of Valencia. "It's spectacular that the solution came from the same entanglement phenomenon used for quantum communication and computing."

The discovery was reported this month in the journal?Physical Review Letters.

94% The Sessions

All Critics (144) | Top Critics (39) | Fresh (136) | Rotten (8)

Achieves its sunny disposition by pulling punches.

A funny, tender and mostly unsentimentalized movie about physical and emotional triumph.

Forced to do all his acting with his face, Hawkes displays the kind of camera-arresting capability that has earned others Oscar nominations.

This is a crowd-pleaser of the finest sort.

Using only his tilted head, his eyes, nose, and mouth and that quizzical voice, Hawkes brings O'Brien to life.

Raw, unrestrained and sympathetic without giving in to melodrama, 'The Sessions' is about a man facing a physical challenge who decides he wants to become intimate with a woman.

An intelligent, funny, insightful film that offers a frank examination of sex. It's not prurient or titillating, just truthful.

A remarkable actor, John Hawkes, gives a remarkable performance as a remarkable character.

Surprisingly funny and touching.

Presents the sensitive O'Brien as a brave, funny, unselfish and unlikely romantic-fantasy dream hero for disappointed, weary or jaded older female moviegoers.

The uplifting struggle for living a life of dignity for paralyzed from the neck down polio victim Mark O'Brien.

The sex scenes are frank and explicit, but never cheap and exploitative. (Yes, they get naked. Grow up.) The nudity isn't airbrushed pin-up perfection, but raw and real - and all the more lovely and moving because of it.

Taking the good with the bad, this isn't a terrible movie, though it is being rather overhyped. I found myself laughing a lot and enjoying the transformations the actors go through, but an unengaging story only serves to drag it down.

A film, inspired by the life of the late poet-journalist Mark O'Brien, that celebrates the relationship between physical and emotional intimacy.

Not just another weepy drama of overcoming odds, a My Left Foot with a different appendage. The Sessions is often brazenly funny, not from shocking dialogue but characters reacting the way people do, especially with such a flustering subject as sex.

an unusually frank and frequently humorous meditation on the transformative power of connection

Take away the nudity and the frank sex talk and you'd pretty much be left with a high-minded TV movie -- with unusually good actors.

Hunt's tangible disregard for false modesty does justice to the misunderstood surrogacy profession, while Hawkes' committed yet matter-of-fact portrayal of O'Brien masterfully avoids theatricality or sappy heartstring tugging.

Lewin has never had talent like Hawkes, Hunt, and Macy as his instruments before, and he makes the best of them.

Popular sex therapist Dr. Ruth once said that sexual surrogates are "illegal." The Sessions makes them mainstream.

An adult film that approaches the serious subject of sex with refreshingly explicit honesty.

The honest performances and assured direction makes The Sessions an extremely accomplished film that celebrates sexuality.

John Hawkes and Helen Hunt generate an endearing chemistry, here, turning in a couple of virtuoso performances deserving of serious consideration come Oscar season.

Writer-director Ben Lewin has made the decision to position the film somewhere between the comedic and dramatic genres.... and it works.

Nexus 4 16GB available on Daily Steals for $499

Daily Deals Nexus 4

While many people still have backordered Nexus 4 devices waiting to be shipped, deals site Daily Steals is offering the unlocked 16GB version for a cool $499. The "list price" is a severely inflated $799, although we all know they're listed for $349 on the Play Store. We're not sure if this site got their devices from LG with a bulk discount, or somehow snatched up some when they were briefly on sale from Google, but we doubt they have that many in stock.

As is usually the case with these, they're probably going to sell out quick, so be sure to jump on one of these if you just can't wait any longer to get that sweet Nexus into your hands. If it's any consolation, you'll likely save some money when compared to the prices on eBay right now.

Couple swept to sea in effort to save son, dog

EUREKA, Calif. (AP) ? A couple died and their 16-year-old son went missing after being swept into sea in Northern California while trying to save their dog, authorities said Sunday.

The family was at Big Lagoon, a beach north of Eureka, Saturday afternoon when the dog chased after a thrown stick and got pulled into the ocean by eight to ten foot waves, said Dana Jones, a state Parks and Recreation district superintendent.

Jones said the boy went after the dog, prompting his father to go after them. She said the teenager was able to get out, but when he didn't see his father, he and his mother went into the water looking for him.

"Both were dragged into the ocean," Jones said.

The Times-Standard reports (http://bit.ly/UmSP2P) the couple's daughter called police.

Jones said a park ranger had to run a half mile to get to the beach because his car wasn't made to handle the terrain. When he arrived, he wasn't able to get to them because of the high surf, she said.

Rescuers eventually retrieved the mother's body and the father's body washed up.

The Coast Guard deployed a helicopter and two motor life boats to search for the teenager, but the aerial search was suspended Saturday evening by thick coastal fog.

A call seeking the status of the Coast Guard's search on Sunday wasn't immediately returned.

The dog got out of the water on its own, Jones said.

Eurozone fails to reach deal on Greece aid

BRUSSELS (AP) ? European Union officials failed Wednesday to reach a deal on giving Greece more aid, prolonging uncertainty over the future of the debt-hobbled country and the 17-member eurozone.

Jean-Claude Juncker, chairman of the meeting of finance ministers from the 17 countries that use the euro, said the talks, which lasted nearly 12 hours, will reconvene on Monday. It was the second consecutive meeting at which the ministers failed to agree on a deal, highlighting the depth of their divisions over how to handle Greece's huge debt problem without reaching more deeply into the pockets of their own taxpayers.

Juncker, however, said he was optimistic that a deal could be reached.

"We are very close to a result. We see no major stumbling block," he said. There are technical issues and calculations to be made in coming days, he said.

But Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, which gives Greece bailout loans alongside the eurozone, sounded a more cautious note, saying only "we have narrowed the positions."

Investors reacted by selling the euro, which dropped from above $1.2810 to $1.2755 within a half hour. Stock markets in Asia surrendered early gains.

There has been disagreement among the ministers and the IMF on how to make Athens' debt manageable. The eurozone ministers are in favor of giving Greece an extra two years, to 2022, to bring its debt down to 120 percent of gross domestic product from the 176 percent forecast for this year. The IMF has resisted such an extension.

Agreement on this issue is needed for the group of creditors to pay Greece the next batch of its rescue loans, expected to amount to ?44.6 billion ($57 billion). Greece the needs the money to avoid bankruptcy.

Greece has been relying since 2010 on international bailout loans, under terms supervised by the so-called troika ? the IMF, the European Central Bank and the European Commission, which is the 27-country European Union's executive branch. Two weeks ago, Greece's coalition government narrowly succeeded in passing a ?13.5 billion package of budget cuts, tax increases and reforms in order to secure the latest loan payment.

The main aim of the bailout program is to right the country's economy and get it to a point where it no longer relies on international aid and can independently raise money on the debt markets.

The question of debt sustainability is as important as it is divisive: If Greece's debts can't be reduced to a level where the country can afford to pay them, the billions of euros in bailout loans given to Greece will have been wasted.

One of the reasons Greece is not expected to reduce its debt to 120 percent of GDP by 2020 is that its austerity program of spending cuts and tax hikes is hurting the economy, which faces a sixth year of recession in 2013.

To ease the impact on the economy, Greece's fellow eurozone countries agreed last week to grant Athens an extra two years until 2016 to implement its program of austerity reforms and budget deficit cuts. But this extension will also cost more money ? another ?32 billion through 2016, according to the troika ? since the debt will have to be financed over a longer period.

Many eurozone countries are opposed to putting more money into Greece's aid program.

The eurozone countries could help pay for the extension by lowering the interest rates Greece has to pay for its rescue loans. They have also indicated that they would be willing to hand back to Greece profits they receive on Greek bonds held by the European Central Bank.

That may not be enough, though. Dutch finance minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem warned the extension could, in the end, cost new taxpayer money. "The chance is very large. I see it as my duty to make sure the damage is as limited as possible," he said.

The eurozone finance ministers will try on Monday to finally clinch an agreement on how to help Greece, but they will not be able to give final approval. Parliaments in some of the countries must first vote, after which the ministers will meet again on the issue.

File-Sharing's Cloudy Future

Last month Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom, who is facing charges in the United States for engaging in digital piracy, announced that he would relocate a new version of his site, Me.ga, outside the United States. The belief was that this would free him from coming under fire by U.S. law enforcement, but Gabon -- which controls the ".ga" domain -- has already suspended it.

96% Sister

All Critics (46) | Top Critics (13) | Fresh (44) | Rotten (2)

Seydoux perfectly captures the anger and self-defeat of ill-educated, hedonistic, man-chasing young women who live on the fringes.

L?a Seydoux fulfills Louise, and Kacey Mottet Klein, as Simon, is one more to join the pantheon of film's excellent child actors.

Haunting and sad. And absolutely worth seeing.

The chemistry between the two leads is a razor's-edge dance: feral, childish, tender and always complex.

Movies about wayward kids are a European specialty. The new film "Sister" deepens the specialty.

The influence of Belgian masters Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne's documentary eye for youth on the margins is evident in Ursula Meier's calmly heartbreaking drama.

Emotionally engaging and impeccably crafted

Klein and Seydoux give such naturalistic performances that they're never overwhelmed by the spectacle.

"Sister" is loose and episodic, but held together with nicely sketched characters.

[A]voids bathos. . .reveals unexpected depth in a heartbreaking bond. . . Different classes conflict [in] adjacent spaces . . .in spare, realistic Dardennes' style.

Meier draws out wonderfully naturalistic performances from her young stars, with Mottet Klein particularly good as the young roustabout Simon ...

It comes over like a subtle short story and is well acted.

Meier's portrait of Simon ... is richly atmospheric and never sentimental.

An enigmatic, heartfelt account of a vulnerable young boy's yearning for a better life.

Most intriguing is how the writers and director have transformed what's essentially a rather dark, bleak story into something involving and emotionally resonant, all without ever turning sentimental.

It is an interesting and well-made movie, though with an uncertain ending.

Sister gradually reveals pattern in its tapestry of everyday life.

An expert piece of storytelling with a host of strong character turns and thematic depth to burn.

A healthy seam of mischief helps cut through the occasionally rote social comment.

An emotionally engaging, beautifully shot and impressively directed Dardennes-esque French drama with a superb script and excellent performances from Kacey Mottet Klein and L?a Seydoux.

An unusual, involving, slightly strained character study from Ursula Meier, the French director of 2008's satirical dystopia, 'Home'.

'Sister' often recalls the recent work of the Dardenne brothers of Belgium and that landmark of the French new wave, Francois Truffaut's 'The 400 Blows' (1959).

Psychologically complex. You may be shocked, you may be moved, but you won't easily forget "Sister."

Sony rear camera questions

We have a Sony rear and side view camera system that came installed on our rig. The picture from the rear only is distorted (picture below). The side cams are fine so I have to guess the rear cam or a connection to it is bad.

I took a look at the connection on the camera and there does not appear to be a plug on the camera. When disconnecting what looks like a plug there are just small wired going directly in.

I got to the back of the monitor and there is one video plug and one audio for the mic in the rear cam. Since there are three cams, where do all the wires meet? Something must be connected to the turn signals because the side cams come on automatically when they are used. I also will assume there is some type of plug like the RCAs behind the monitor somewhere in the rear.

TIA for any help.
EDIT: I found out the thing I am looking for is called a video switcher. Now to figure out where it is hidden.
