Assad masses Syrian cyber army in online crackdown

Syria's violence against civilians is being matched with online abuses as the government uses hacking and surveillance tools to track its people

COMPARED with the activists who led the revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia, anti-government protesters in Syria face a tough, tech-savvy foe. The Egyptian government notoriously shut down the country's internet access for a time in January last year because activists were using social media to organise protests. By contrast, the regime of Bashar al-Assad has allowed Syrians to keep accessing Facebook and YouTube. It may sound munificent, but allows the regime to read dissidents' messages and track their movements.

We should not be surprised at the regime's methods, says Helmi Noman at the Munk School of Global Affairs in Toronto, Canada. "The Syrian Computer Society was headed by al-Assad himself in the 1990s before he became president," he says. He is referring to the body that registered the domain name of the pro-regime Syrian Electronic Army, the Arab world's first openly active group of hackers. The group has defaced websites linked with the opposition, as well as sites belonging to media organisations and governments that appear sympathetic to the protesters.

The government also keeps a close eye on cyber dissidents, arresting 12 online activists last week. It has even shown some basic hacking skills of its own. Last May, Syrian activists noticed that the country's telecommunications ministry was eavesdropping on Facebook traffic. The hack was crude and easily spotted, but probably succeeded in capturing many passwords and private messages. Soon after, a message with a link to what was billed as "fascinating video clip showing an attack on Syrian regime" began appearing on Syrians' Twitter accounts. It linked to what looked like Facebook's login page, but was really a phishing site.

The government's focus on social media has led activists to take extra precautions. "When [the government] arrests activists, they ask them for their Facebook login information," says one Syria-based activist who was detained for two months last year, and spoke to New Scientist on condition of anonymity. "But most activists have already created alternative personal pages to be used for such a situation.

"Even if they could get into the real page of the activists and try to look into his or her friends, most activists use fake names, so it's difficult to reach a real activist that way."

Like the Gaddafi regime in Libya, the Syrian government has bought equipment from the west to help it intercept communications. According to documents obtained by Bloomberg News, two Irish companies supplied Syria with anti-spam devices that can block text messages containing specific words or phrases. The devices are not illegal, but are now being exploited by the Syrian authorities to block messages about protests and government attacks on civilians.

The involvement of western firms has prompted hacker group Anonymous to get involved. The group reportedly broke into the computers of a firm that sold tear gas to Syria, and has hacked into Syrian officials' email accounts.

Opposition groups are still using the web to get news out of the country, but technology is no longer key when it comes to organising, says Anas Qtiesh, a Syrian blogger and translator based in San Francisco. "The internet has taken a back seat," he says. "Phones are heavily monitored and easily tracked. People don't trust them."

SRINAGAR, India (AP) ? Two massive avalanches in snowbound regions of Indian-controlled Kashmir killed at least 16 soldiers, and at least three others were feared trapped in a military camp that was partially buried under snow, an official said Thursday.

Col. K.S. Grewal said three of the soldiers were killed in the mountainous area of Sonamarg and 13 were killed at a large army camp in Dawar, a town close to the heavily militarized cease-fire line that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan. Hundreds of thousands of Indian troops are stationed along this de-facto border.

Both avalanches took place late Wednesday night, and state officials warned more may occur in mountain areas.

Rescue workers in Dawar pulled out 13 survivors who were being treated at a local army hospital, Grewal said. Three soldiers there were still believed to be trapped under the snow, he said.

Dawar, in the frontier Gurez region, remains cut off from the rest of Kashmir for nearly five months every year as heavy snowfall and rains block road links to the region.

Army rescue teams from other parts of the region were trying to reach the Dawar army camp but were delayed by heavy fog, snow and cloud cover, Grewal said.

Later Thursday, an army helicopter managed to airdrop a special team of the military rescuers and two sniffer dogs to help search, Grewal said.

At least 25 army vehicles and 17 barracks were damaged in the avalanche, said Amir Ali, a state government disaster management official.

Ali warned of more avalanches across mountainous parts of Indian Kashmir.

Another two state government officials, on duty in Sonamarg, were missing, Ali said.

Avalanches and landslides are common in the disputed Himalayan region. Last month, an avalanche killed seven soldiers as they were clearing an army supply road. In 2010, 17 soldiers died when a wall of snow and ice slammed into the army's High Altitude Warfare School in Kashmir.

Oil near 9-month high after Greece debt deal

SINGAPORE (AP) ? Oil traded close to a nine-month high near $105 a barrel Tuesday in Asia after European leaders agreed to lend Greece euro130 billion ($170 billion) to avoid a debt default.

Benchmark crude was up $1.47 to $104.71 per barrel at midday Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On Monday it traded at $105.44, the highest since May. The contract last settled on Friday when it rose 93 cents to settle at $103.24 per barrel in New York.

Brent crude was steady at $120.05 per barrel in London.

U.S. markets were closed Monday for the Presidents Day holiday.

European Union officials agreed early Tuesday to hand Greece a second massive bailout to help save it from bankruptcy. Private bondholders will take a 53.5 percent loss on their holdings which, along with tough austerity measures, is hoped will lower Greece's debt level to about 120 percent of gross domestic product.

Crude has jumped from $96 earlier this month and $75 in October as signs of an improving U.S. economy bolstered investor confidence. However, analysts are concerned higher fuel costs could stifle consumer spending and undercut economic growth.

"A significant run-up in oil prices are an important contributor to an economic malaise," energy trader and consultant The Schork Group said in a report. "With the U.S. economy starting to show signs of life, high prices now just might kill this recovery in the cradle."

In other energy trading, heating oil added 1.9 cents to $3.20 per gallon and gasoline futures rose 3.1 cents to $3.22 per gallon. Natural gas slid 5.0 cents to $2.63 per 1,000 cubic feet.
