Syria's violence against civilians is being matched with online abuses as the government uses hacking and surveillance tools to track its people

The group has defaced websites linked with the opposition, as well as sites belonging to media organisations and governments that appear sympathetic to the protesters.

The government also keeps a close eye on cyber dissidents, arresting 12 online activists last week. It has even shown some basic hacking skills of its own. The government's focus on social media has led activists to take extra precautions. "When [the government] arrests activists, they ask them for their Facebook login information," says one Syria-based activist who was detained for two months last year, and spoke to New Scientist on condition of anonymity. "But most activists have already created alternative personal pages to be used for such a situation.

"Even if they could get into the real page of the activists and try to look into his or her friends, most activists use fake names, so it's difficult to reach a real activist that way."

Like the Gaddafi regime in Libya, the Syrian government has bought equipment from the west to help it intercept communications. According to documents obtained by Bloomberg News, two Irish companies supplied Syria with anti-spam devices that can block text messages containing specific words or phrases. The devices are not illegal, but are now being exploited by the Syrian authorities to block messages about protests and government attacks on civilians.

The involvement of western firms has prompted hacker group Anonymous to get involved. The group reportedly broke into the computers of a firm that sold tear gas to Syria, and has hacked into Syrian officials' email accounts.

Opposition groups are still using the web to get news out of the country, but technology is no longer key when it comes to organising, says Anas Qtiesh, a Syrian blogger and translator based in San Francisco. "The internet has taken a back seat," he says. "Phones are heavily monitored and easily tracked. People don't trust them."

SRINAGAR, India (AP) ? Two massive avalanches in snowbound regions of Indian-controlled Kashmir killed at least 16 soldiers, and at least three others were feared trapped in a military camp that was partially buried under snow, an official said Thursday.

Col. K.S. Grewal said three of the soldiers were killed in the mountainous area of Sonamarg and 13 were killed at a large army camp in Dawar, a town close to the heavily militarized cease-fire line that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan. Hundreds of thousands of Indian troops are stationed along this de-facto border.

Both avalanches took place late Wednesday night, and state officials warned more may occur in mountain areas.

Rescue workers in Dawar pulled out 13 survivors who were being treated at a local army hospital, Grewal said. Three soldiers there were still believed to be trapped under the snow, he said.

Dawar, in the frontier Gurez region, remains cut off from the rest of Kashmir for nearly five months every year as heavy snowfall and rains block road links to the region.

Army rescue teams from other parts of the region were trying to reach the Dawar army camp but were delayed by heavy fog, snow and cloud cover, Grewal said.

Later Thursday, an army helicopter managed to airdrop a special team of the military rescuers and two sniffer dogs to help search, Grewal said.

At least 25 army vehicles and 17 barracks were damaged in the avalanche, said Amir Ali, a state government disaster management official.

Ali warned of more avalanches across mountainous parts of Indian Kashmir.

Another two state government officials, on duty in Sonamarg, were missing, Ali said.

Avalanches and landslides are common in the disputed Himalayan region. Last month, an avalanche killed seven soldiers as they were clearing an army supply road. In 2010, 17 soldiers died when a wall of snow and ice slammed into the army's High Altitude Warfare School in Kashmir.

Nasty 'superbug' emerging? Strikes otherwise healthy, young patients

ScienceDaily (Feb. 17, 2012) ? University at Buffalo researchers are expressing concern about a new, under-recognized, much more potent variant of a common bacterium that has surfaced in the U.S.

"Historically, in Western countries, classical strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae have caused infections mostly in sick, hospitalized patients whose host defense systems are compromised," says Thomas Russo, MD, professor in the Department of Medicine at the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and head of its Infectious Disease Division.

"But in the last 10 to 15 years, a new variant of it has begun causing community-acquired infection in young, healthy individuals," he says. "This variant causes serious, life-threatening, invasive infections and is able to spread to other organs from the initial site of infection."

Perhaps most important, says Russo, these hypervirulent strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae have the potential to become highly resistant to antibiotics, similar to Escherichia coli and classical Klebsiella pneumoniae.

"These hypervirulent strains are the next 'superbugs' -in-waiting," he says. "If they become resistant to antibiotics, they will become difficult, if not impossible to treat."

With recent funding from the National Institutes of Health under a program to fund high-risk, high-reward research, Russo and his UB colleagues are studying the microbiology of the new variant of Klebsiella pneumoniae in an effort to identify the genes that make it hypervirulent so they can figure out how to stop it in its tracks.

"Infections due to highly resistant bacteria are becoming increasingly problematic," says Russo. "We are continually threatened by a 'post-antibiotic' era. The combination of a bacterium that is both highly virulent and resistant to antimicrobials is double-trouble."

The researchers' concern stems from the fact that classical Klebsiella pneumoniae is one of the bacterial species that can easily acquire mobile genetic units, called plasmids, that contain multiple genes that confer high levels of antimicrobial resistance.

"That's in part why we're concerned," says Russo. "We know that this bacterium has the potential to acquire these plasmids and it almost certainly will."

He notes that most bacteria that have proven to be resistant to most or all of the drugs currently available do not usually infect healthy members of the community.

"What is alarming about the hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae is that they do possess the potential to infect healthy people," says Russo. "If this hypervirulent bacterium also becomes highly resistant to antimicrobials, we will have a significant problem to manage. We hope that our research and that of others can prevent this possibility."

While the new hypervirulent variant was first seen exclusively in in the Pacific Rim, it has now been found in several cities in North America, including Buffalo, and in Europe, Canada, Israel and South Africa as well. The UB researchers characterize it as "under-recognized" both by physicians and microbiology laboratories.

The disease most commonly presents as a liver abscess, which is not typical for otherwise healthy patients.

"This new variant presents with unique and scary features: first is its tendency to infect young, healthy people in the community and the second is its unique propensity for metastatic spread to other parts of the body," says Russo. "It spreads to sites beyond the initial source of the infection, such as the lungs, the central nervous system and the eye, potentially causing loss of vision. If infection spreads to the brain, there can be brain damage as well. Between 10 and 30 percent of cases are fatal."

In Buffalo, this hypervirulent variant of Klebsiella pneumoniae was identified in an otherwise healthy, young person several years ago. The patient, who was in his 20s, was hospitalized for several months before making a full recovery. Similar cases are causing concern throughout the international infectious disease community.

At the moment, most cases of hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae resolve if treated aggressively with antibiotics and drainage of abscesses; however, some infections, despite optimal treatment, result in a persistent morbidity or death, Russo says.

He notes that the potential for the bug to acquire drug resistance is adding a sense of urgency to the research.

Russo says that microbiology labs should be aware that an important characteristic of these hypervirulent strains (also known as hypermucoviscous strains) is that when bacterial colonies grown on a solid surface in the laboratory are stretched by a common microbiology tool, called an inoculation loop, they form a viscous "string" greater than 5 millimeters in length.

Russo's team at UB is now beginning to develop a clearer picture of this formidable bacterial opponent.

In November, he and his colleagues published a PLoS ONE paper that showed that hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae acquires iron more efficiently than the usual strains of K. pneumoniae.

"With the NIH grant, we hope to further elucidate the precise details of the bacterial factors that are responsible for hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae acquiring iron so much more efficiently," he says. "The goal of this line of research is that these iron-acquisition factors possessed by hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae will then lend themselves as therapeutic or vaccine targets so that we can better treat or prevent infection."

In addition to Russo, other UB researchers working on hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae are Alyssa S. Shon, an Infectious Diseases Fellow in the Department of Medicine; Janet Beanan, Ulrike MacDonald, Daniel Metzger and Ruth Olson, all research technicians in the Department of Medicine, and Alex Pomakov, a UB undergraduate majoring in biomedical sciences. Mark P. Visitacion, MD, a former Infectious Diseases Fellow in the UB Department of Medicine, was also part of the team.

'Little People' star sad about Rosie's comments

Rosie O'Donnell's recent comments about having "a mild fear or anxiety around little people" are the kind of sentiments that make Amy Rolloff, one of the stars of TLC's "Little People, Big World," sad.

On Thursday, Amy told TODAY's Willie Geist that sort talk "plays on you. I was taken back. I was sad really to hear that from someone."

After all, she, husband Matt and their four children spent six seasons on the air hoping to dispel such prejudices. "We think we've made a lot of progress, and then we saw some stuff the other day and thought, 'Gosh, we still have a lot of work to do,'" said Matt.

Maybe that's why their show, which has been off the air since 2010, is back for a series of four specials.

Having the cameras back around has been a challenge at times for the couple. They find it odd to watch emotional events play out on television months after they've occurred.

"The hardest thing about being on reality TV is when we see these episodes, for us that happened a little bit ago.... It's like, 'Are we reliving this again?'" said Amy. "We're over it, we're past it.... Should I still be mad? Should I still be angry? Should I still be happy?"

The couple will be celebrating their 25th anniversary this year and noted that some of their marriage ups and downs did get an airing during the show. But as Amy says now, "I think in the long run, we're doing great."

"Little People, Big World" airs Sunday, Feb. 19 at 8:00 p.m. on TLC.

Obama to stress "insourcing" as China counterweight (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama takes his election-year economic message to the Midwestern heartland on Wednesday, touring a Wisconsin padlock factory and stressing the potential of "insourcing" jobs back to the United States from overseas.

The day after meeting China's leader-in-waiting, Vice President Xi Jinping, at the White House, Obama was set to make the case for exploiting U.S. advantages over fast-growing economies where labor and business costs are rising.

In Milwaukee, best known as the home of Miller beer, he will visit the company Master Lock that he lauded in his State of the Union address last month for having moved back about 100 union jobs from China since mid-2010.

Master Lock, a unit of Fortune Brands Home & Security, is the world's largest manufacturer of padlocks and related products to secure homes, cars and bicycles. It says its Milwaukee plant is running at full capacity for the first time in 15 years - an example the White House is eager to replicate as the November 6 election nears.

"Right now we have an excellent opportunity to bring manufacturing back - but we have to seize it," Obama said in a statement released before the Wisconsin visit, which starts a three-day trip where the Democrat will raise funds in California and stop in at aircraft manufacturer Boeing in Washington state.

"My message to business leaders is simple: ask yourselves what you can do to bring jobs back to your country, and your country will do everything we can to help you succeed," he said.

PRODUCTIVITY GAINS

How to cope with a rising China - and compete against cheap Chinese exports - is one of the toughest challenges for Obama to navigate as the election approaches, particularly as opinion polls showing rising U.S. voter frustration with the Asian economic powerhouse.

In Washington on Tuesday, he struck a friendly but firm tone with Xi, who is in line to assume the Chinese presidency in March 2013. But at the Master Lock plant, the president is expected to cheer U.S. productivity gains that have encouraged some companies to turn their backs on China and start investing in and moving workers back to the United States.

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, a former private equity executive, has accused Obama of being too conciliatory with China and lacking the executive or other leadership experience to steer the U.S. economy toward lasting recovery.

The White House also said that Japanese carmaker Honda had plans to invest in a Ohio plant and that heavy equipment maker Caterpillar decided to shift production of excavators from Japan to Texas to support U.S. customers better.

UNION PROTESTS

Master Lock is a positive story for Obama, who needs to tout his economic leadership to secure another White House term.

The Democratic president won Wisconsin in 2008 and although Republicans performed well in 2010 state and congressional elections, polls show him likely to clinch it again in November amid frustration over Republican Governor Scott Walker's policies toward labor unions.

Last year, Walker signed into law legislation ending most collective bargaining rights for public workers and forcing them to pay more for pensions and health coverage. Obama's visit to the unionized factory on Wednesday coincides with the first anniversary of protests over Walker's union move.

The governor, who is expected to accompany Obama to Master Lock, said it was necessary to rein in costs in a time of pinched budgets. Walker's critics accuse him of ramming through union-busting proposals and are trying to oust him with a voter recall.

Missed Connections Love Story: How Craigslist & Johnny Thunders Led To A Punk Romance (PHOTOS)

"I already had a crush on him before we actually met," Tillie told The Huffington Post.

Tillie and Jacob, who had never met, went to the Sept. 2011 F*ck Yeah Festival at the dusty state park in downtown Los Angeles to see the same two bands: Dead Milkmen and the Descendents. Tillie, 22, saw Jacob, 24, as soon as she walked into the park.

"I always feel so creepy when I tell this story," Tillie wrote in an email. "One of the first things I noticed about him (besides his handsome appearance, obviously) was his shirt. He was wearing a Johnny Thunders shirt, which I thought was pretty cool."

She saw him a couple times throughout the day and told her friends she wanted to tell him she liked his shirt. She even went looking for him a few times. Finally, during the last hour of the festival, her friends and she walked around looking for someone who was lost from the group. "The whole time we were walking around, watching everyone leave, I was looking for him," she said. But no luck.

Within hours of getting home, Tillie's friend talked her into putting a "missed connections" post on Craigslist. She opened the post with Johnny Thunders' "You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory" (listen in slideshow below) lyrics:

Cute blonde guy at FYF in Johnny Thunders t-shirt -- You can't put your arms around a memory, but I'd like [to] put my arms around you ... I'm pretty sure it was love at first sight, unless the dust in my eyes was worse than I thought.

"I'd never posted on there before. I thought it was funny more than anything," Tillie said.

Three days later, Jacob signed in Facebook to find Tillie's posting on his wall. His friend Mike had found the ad.

"I have to admit I was a little flattered but had no idea whatsoever if it was a Craigslist creep or what to think," Jacob recounted to HuffPost in an email. "I went with my gut though because of the Thunders reference."

He responded with an email that said, "Yeah girl from santa barbara with L U V" (reference to Johnny Thunders lyrics "When I say I'm in love, you best believe I'm in love L-U-V!").

Tillie was "totally freaked out" that he replied but after they began to chat online, she knew she was "on to something good when we started joking with each other. We have the same sense of humor."

Jacob commented that Tillie "turned out to be the perfect girl" who is "the perfect amount creepy for me."

A few days into hitting it off and realizing how much they had in common, they decided to meet at one of Jacob's friend's punk shows.

"I think it might have been the most nervous I have ever been in my life," Tillie recalled.

Jacob joked, "I thought she was even cuter in person, which, of course, was one of the first things I said. Romantic right?"

"We ended up spending the entire weekend together, and I think we have hung out every weekend since," Tillie recounted. "I knew I didn't want to be without him."

A month later, Jacob was living with Tillie and her mom in Hancock Park. Tillie described their duplex home as a kind of "mad house."

"My mom; two dogs, Hans and Cory; our two new turtles, Lucielle and Ravioli; and Jacob and I live downstairs, and a few of my cousins live upstairs," she explained.

Tillie works at a dog rescue and says it is her passion. "Jacob calls me a 'dogist,'" she said.

And, believe it or not, the two lovebirds actually work together at the shelter now too. "I love working together," Tillie commented. "He usually puts the dogs away for dinner while I make the food, or one of us will walk dogs while the other one cleans up, things like that."

When asked to describe their relationship, Jacob answered, "We are both intensely weird. The both of us share a lot of the same passions like anything to do with the 'Muppets,' sleeping in and eating terrible food."

He added about his girlfriend, "She helps me to be a halfway decent person. I owe her everything for how good she's been to me. I'll never be done repaying her."

Tillie's analysis of their roles: "I motivate him to brush his teeth sometimes, and he often talks me out of brushing mine."

In all seriousness, Tillie shared that Jacob "puts up with me when I'm at my worst and is always going out of his way to make me happy." She continued, "He helps me out whenever I need it, no matter what it is. He is my best friend."

Tillie and Jacob have been together now for four months and are saving up for a place of their own. "The animals will be joining us, and we will probably have more in the future," Tillie said. "I plan on starting my own dog business, but that is a few years down the road."

Tillie's advice regarding posting a missed connection? "DO IT! There is nothing to lose. At the very least you will have something to laugh about with your friends."

On the receiving end, Jacob advised, "Refresh refresh, refresh. The next one could be about you."

Meditation has opened up my life to a whole new world of visualization and self improvement techniques. I have learned how to deal with stress and manage the previous chatter and inconsistencies in my life. If you don't meditate, you need to! It is truly a life changing experience and I would encourage anyone and EVERYONE to try it.

Going from a VICTIM to a SURVIVOR!!

17 years of domestic violence can take its toll on anyone but the most important thing it did for me was change my way of thinking once I got out. My whole attitude on life changed and I realized with the power of positive thinking; I can accomplish anything. I have become more motivated to achieve goals I had put off in my life like continuing my education and starting my own business. I will complete my goals period. No excuses. Nothing left to do but follow my dreams and stay motivated and with a positive attitude that I will never again be in that predicament.

Just Starting Out

I was raised in a very negative background, which has finally taken a toll on me in my 40s - physically, in my relationships, at work. I had a stress breakdown several weeks ago and couldn't function. Anger is a problem, too, of course. But my doctor didn't give up - as soon as I started having symptoms, she sent me to every speccialist she could think of, did every test conveivable, and finally said, "Stress is killing you. You must stop now." I went online and read up on being more positive (including here), and I am healing. Slowly, but surely. I had no idea just pushing away a negative thought or dropping stressors (and people) I didn't even know were a problem could make such a difference. I'm grateful to my doctor for waking me up and giving me a second chance.

Positive thinking has helped me get every job I've interviewed for. I know I'm not perfect but I go into an interview thinking that I deserve the job and I'm going to get it. I don't focus on the negative thoughts that can get in the way of a good interview.

Positive thinking and gratitude

Positive thinking has been helpful to me in my current relationship and my overall attitude on life. I have had several self defeating behaviors caused by negative thinking in the past. It has cost me relationships and many years of happiness. By expressing gratitude on a daily basis, I can focus on what I have instead of what I can't have. This has me focused more on a positive mentality instead of the easy out negative thinking. I can accomplish a complete transformation on any given subject when I recognize my negative thoughts. I simply think of the alternative positive spin I could be putting on the subject and apply it immediately.

Finding a Job.

Over the course of a year, i was heavily looking for a job. I went to numerous interviews, which i did not get the job eventually. That did not stop me from thinking positive. After each interview i took out a positive thing, which was experience and i always told myself i will find a job!

Endless nights and days I always pictured myself working. A short while ago one of my friends said there was an opening at her work place, so i went it. Once i got there it felt like i belonged there. I passed the interview and now im a happy hard working man.

Think Positive.

I remember when I started thinking positive, I was in 5th grade, back in africa. I remember making a bet with my english teacher. I actually told him how much I would get in my exam, and I remember holding that percentage in my head on the examination day. And three days later I found that I had actually passed with the same percentage I held in my head. Ever since then, no matter what the situation is I always think positive.

Gratitude Really Does Work!

I jumped in about six months ago and began a simple mantra ... "good things always happen to me". At the same time, I started writing everyday the things I have to be grateful for.

Since then, good things really do happen to me. Unexpected things. Things like building my business, creating a better and growing relationship with my son, and meeting new friends who have helped me both personally and professionally.

Just try gratitude! There's nothing to lose and so very much to be gained!

how thoughts affect my mood

Positive thinking helps me to be a much more functional person. I have a tendency to be depressed and that tendency can lead to negative thinking.

When I take the time to consider the content of my thoughts and think through the positive side of whatever is going on, I am more able to do the things I need to do.

Martin Seligman is an author who writes about this and his books have helped me to understand how my thoughts can affect my mood.

I have always struggled to keep up with all of my responsibilities - being a single parent, full time job, financial struggle etc and was tired, emotional and stressed. I turned to the power of positive thinking and the law of attraction and decided to 'swim downstream' for a while. I now see that I dont have to be everything to everyone to achieve what I desire - if I stress less everything comes so much easier, freeing up my time and spare cash

Truely Amazing

In April 1996, I gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Two weeks later he contracted active B menigitis. He suffered a stroke that paralyzed his right side and suffered from a massive heart attack. I just could not believe the doctors when they told me he would not be a normal little boy. They did everything to talk me into putting a feeding tube in. They told me he would never walk, talk, or eat on his own. They told me he would not make it to see his fifth birthday.
My son is now fifteen years old and he walks, talks, and eats on his own. The doctors have found several other things wrong with him, but I will not now or ever loose my faith that he will over come all that is wrong with him.

The most recent situation was fighting to get my daughter in to kindergarten. She will be 5 on August 9th which is 8 days past the cut off date, so the arguments begin. I wasn't real optomistic because she was made to take an IQ test to be accepted as an early entrance student. I stayed positive and nice to everyone involved and guess what: she took the IQ test and her results were at the genious level. So after months of fighting, headaches, frustration and tears, the positivity paid off!!

Discovering Positive Thinking

I have found it amazing what positive thinking has unleashed for me and my sense of spirituality. I am still trying to make positive thinking, affirmations, intention setting all part of my daily routine but I am in such a better state of mind with every new piece of knowledge I gain. I am a fast paced career woman who never slowed down to enjoy the beauty of life, nature, and even stillness. I am a softer person for introducing positive thinking to my life. A couple of my favorite books are; The Seven Spiritual Laws for Success by Deepak Chopra and The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz.

Turning every stumbling block to a stepping stone to success

My name is Samuel, I work in an hotel where we have to sleep in the bar after the day's sales.one day,after d day's work I was so tired so I sat down very close to one of our late night customer. after sometime,I fell asleep with my phone in my hand,after five minutes when I woke up the customer has stolen my phone and he's no where to be found.so I had to wait till d end of that month to get another phone with my salary.At the end of d month.when i got to d market d phone I wanted to buy was #18000 and I had just #15000 on me.so I bought d one of #15000 and sold it at the hotel for #25000. and that's how I discovered phone business.Right now I use iPhone 2 and I have about five phones each of which is not less than #15000. That's my story.
